While I was contemplating who, or what to do for this year’s National History Day, the theme went through my head. I was originally going to do Sitting Bull and the Lakota Sioux in a group exhibit. We realized that it just wasn’t going to work out, so we split up. I searched through the recommendations, given to me by my teacher who helps out with History Day. While looking at the sample topics, I did not find anything that really caught my eye. My brother suggested Lewis and Clark. After doing some research on them, finding many primary sources and documents, I found that Lewis and Clark would fit perfectly in this year’s National History Day.
To conduct my research I looked on my local public library’s website. While on the website, I found some books that I could use for primary sources, and secondary information. After I found a few books that I thought were fitting for me to look at, I went on the Internet. I found a great website www.monticello.org/site/jefferson/lewisandclarkexpedition that I used for secondary information. I also found www.archives.gov/education/lessons/lewisclark helpful for secondary information. Most of my information came from websites, and most of the photos came from books, such as Lewis and Clark’s Journey of Discovery in American History by Judith Edwards and Lewis and Clark and the Route to the Pacific by Seamus Cavan. As for the quotes, I took them from the journals of Lewis and Clark, which I found a translation of on http://lewisclark.net/journals.
At my school, you can choose what type of project you would like to enter. Students could choose from a website, exhibit, documentary, performance, and paper. I thought website would be ideal for me because I wanted to do something different. When it came to creating my website, I made sure everything was clear, and you could access the pages easily. For the theme of my website, I made it look like it was in the 1800’s, with darker colors. I made sure to add all my photos in the appropriate places, with the captions underneath.
Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery relate to this year’s National History Day’s theme because they were explorers. They explored the Louisiana territory after the announcement of the Louisiana Purchase. They encountered unique and different animals they had never seen before, and also encountered a variety of Native American tribes. The also exchanged with some of the Native American tribes, offering William Clark as a doctor, in exchange for food. The Native Americas also exchanged directions with Lewis and Clark. Lewis and Clark exchanged their discoveries with the government and citizens, as they wrote in their journals, which we have access to today.
