They reached the Mandan villages in August, and parted with Charbonneau, Sacagawea, and the baby. The Expedition finished its journey when they reached St. Louis on September 23, 1806.
Once they reached St. Louis in 1806, Lewis and Clark released their men, and traveled east. They visited friends and family, sharing stories of their discoveries. Then, Lewis and Clark held a dinner, where Jefferson gave Meriwether Lewis the title of governor of Upper Louisiana, and William Clark as brigadier general of militia and Indian agent for the vast territory.
