In Spring of 1803, Lewis traveled to Philadelphia to study with scientists. Andrew Ellicott taught Lewis mapmaking and surveying, Robert Patterson tutored him in math, Caspar Wistar in fossils and anatomy and Benjamin Rush in medicine. While in Philadelphia, Lewis bought scientific instruments, army materials, medicines, items for journal keepings, some food, and weapons. Lewis also bought glass beads, needles, tobacco, and knives as gifts for the Native Americans. Jefferson's instructions were to start a friendship and alliance with the Native Americans.
After the purchase of the Louisiana territory from France was announced in July of 1803, Lewis traveled to Clarksville, Indiana, where he met up with William Clark. The journey became more vital, as they were exploring America's lands. Lewis traveled to Pittsburgh and then to the Ohio River. Lewis designed the keelboat, and packed that and two canoe like boats with supplies.
